For this project, I wanted to experiment with a number of things and improve my skillset. One of those being stylized PBR textures. I spent a good part of March learning more about substance painter and this project is a culmination of the things I learnt with it.
My goals for this project were:
- Use a mix of PBR and stylized textures while maintaining the fun feel of the reference image.
- Optimize poly count to make to prep it for game engines
- Keep the proportions and style of assets as close as possible to the concept art
- Implement lighting into the scene and experiment with how they react to different textures to produce the desired result.
- Experiment with sculpting to bring organic shapes to life, particularly the sack in the corner (I was very keen on replicating the sad demeanour created by the silhouette of the bag".
- Add a little bit of animation for extra jazz to the scene.
For stylistic reference, I looked to "The Adventures of Paddington Bear" and "Crash Bandicoot", both of which have a very stylized feel to them.
